What are psyllium husks?
Psyllium husks are the outer layer of psyllium (Plantago ovata) seeds, where the majority of the seed’s fibre is concentrated. The husks absorb water and, as they swell, form a gel-like mass, which is why they are widely used in the food industry and in everyday nutrition – for example, when the diet is low in vegetables, fruit or wholegrain products. Thanks to their neutral taste, the husks are convenient to mix into drinks, yoghurt, porridges, use in baked goods or to thicken sauces.

How to start taking
Start with 1 teaspoon (about 5 g) per day and, if needed, after a few days increase to 1–2 times per day. Mix with at least 200–250 ml of water or juice, drink immediately and additionally wash down with a glass of water. Do not take the dry product – always wash down with a sufficient amount of liquid. Since the husks thicken the liquid, it is better to drink the beverage immediately after mixing, while it is still liquid.
Warnings
Do not use if you have difficulty swallowing or if a bowel narrowing has been diagnosed, except where use has been permitted by a doctor. When taking psyllium husks, it is necessary to drink enough liquid. Pregnant and breastfeeding women, as well as persons taking medication, should consult a doctor or pharmacist before starting to take it. A food supplement should not be used as a substitute for a varied diet.
Allergens
May contain traces of gluten, soy, nuts, sesame, mustard, celery and lupin.
Origin and storage
Origin: India. Made in the European Union. Store in a cool and dry place, with the pack tightly closed. Keep the opened pack protected from moisture – the husks easily absorb water from the air.
Frequently asked questions
Do psyllium husks dissolve in water?
No, they do not dissolve – they absorb water and, as they swell, form a gel. Therefore the mixture thickens within a few minutes, and the beverage must be drunk immediately.
Can they be mixed into a hot drink?
The husks swell in both cold and warm water, but in a hot liquid they thicken faster. It is most convenient to mix them into room-temperature water or juice.
How long does a 150 g pack last?
When taking 5 g per day, the pack lasts about 30 days. If you take it 1–2 times per day, the pack will run out correspondingly sooner.
Is this the same as psyllium seeds?
No. Psyllium husks are the outer layer of the seeds, where the majority of the seed’s fibre is concentrated. The psyllium seed also contains other parts, which is why the husk powder is used as a concentrated source of fibre.
